Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

It is to be regretted that no publicity of the Leeds three-year part-time Certificate in Transport Studies has been apparent in the transport Press generally. Surely such a decision is of importance to all those learning or practising transport?

Here in Newcastle we have found a similar lack of response to management courses in the transport field, especially from road transport. Our own Higher National Diploma in Business Studies (Transport) failed to get off the ground in September due to an insuffi cient number of enrolments! It is hoped that the response will be better for September 1969 when we anticipate launching this new style of study by means of a three-year sandwich course where students spend six months in college each year followed by six months with the industry.

As suggested by Mr. George Wilmot in his article ("Common room", CM Nov. 1) there is a partnership being formed with the Institute of Transport for this course and the other institutes would be welcome to submit their recommendations if they are interested.

D. AWDAS Lecturer in Transport Studies, Municipal College of Commerce, Newcastle.

[We are happy to print Mr. Awdas' letter to draw attention to this proposed facility. The details referred to by the writer show that the syllabus has certain compulsory subjects in each year, for instance economics, statistics, finance and accounting. Many of the subjects correspond to those of the Institute of Transport and thus carry exemption from the Institute's own examinations. As well as the compulsory subjects there are, of course, options to allow for person-al choice. Students must have at least one A-level GCE pass, or an Ordinary National Diploma or certificate in business studies. Details can be obtained from the Head of Department of Business and Retail Studies, College of Commerce, St. Mary's Place, Education Precinct, Newcastle-upon-Tyne NE? SSP—ED.]
