ROAD transport vehicles were. being IX made the scapegoat in discussions on congestion problems when, in fact, lorries were not the cause of congestion. To plead that the transfer of goods from road to rail would ease the congestion, notably in the towns, indicated erroneous thinking. Consider the congestion that would be caused by a fleet of 50 10-ton lorries collecting a 500-ton train load of goods from a rail terminal.
These comments were made by Mr.
D. I. Miers, West Midland area chairman of the Road Haulage Association at the annual dinner-dance last Friday of the R.H.A. Coventry, Rugby and North Warwickshire sub-area in Coventry.
Making a strong plea for more intensive publicity to show the efficiency of road transport in this country, and to fortify the case against political interference, Mr. Miers said it was necessary to examine' the image of road transport presented to the public and to commerce,
