iT was announced shortly after we had closed for press with last week's issue that the Minister of Labour and National Service has confirmed the Central Wages Board proposals for an advance in wages for haulage workers, and the revised rates of statutory remuneration become effective as from Monday next, December 23. The increase amounts to 3s. 6d. per week -for adult workers and Is. 9d. per week for juniors.

SCOTTISH TRAFFIC AREAS MERGED

THE term of office of Mr. H. Riches, 0.B.E., chairman of the Traffic Commissioners for the Northern Scotland Area, expires on December 31 next. The Minister of Transport has decided that, for the period of the war, it is desirable to bring the traffic areas in Scotland into line with the regional organization, and he has, accordingly, made an Order combining the two.

Mr. A. Henderson, who is the Regional Transport Commissioner for Scotland and the chairman of the Southern Scotland Traffic Area, has been appointed chairman of Commissioners for the combined area. Mr. A. Robertson, M.B.E., will be his deputy.

We hinted at the possibility of this merging of the Scottish traffic areas in our issue dated November 1.

PISTON-RING COMPANIES TO AMALGAMATE?

ASCHEME to amalgamate the Leeds Piston Ring Co., Ltd., of Leeds, with Wellworthy Piston Rings, Ltd., of Lyrnington, has been announced in a circular to shareholders of the former concern. This states that the Leeds company's directors have received an offer to purchase the whole of its shares for £80,400, the purchase price to take

the form of 60,000 6 per cent. cumulative preference shares of 10s. each and 200,000 ordinary shares of 5.s. each, in the capital of the Wellworthy company,

It has been agreed that under the scheme Mr. G. Fisher, chairman and managing director of the Leeds company, will become deputy-chairman of the Wel'worthy company, and that his co-directors, Mr. T. G. Booth and Mr. E. J. Norton, will also join the Wellworthy board.

HIGHER FERRY TOLLS UNDER CONSIDERATION

IN order to reduce the estimated deficit of £28,000 on.the working of Wallasey Ferry, an increase is to be made from January 1 in passenger fares, and consideration is now being given to the question of revising the tolls on motor vehicles. Since the opening of the Mersey Tunnel, the volume of goods traffic via the Liverpool-Seacombe ferry has shown a drop.

PERSONAL PARS MR. G. H. PULFREY has been selected by Hull Transport Committee to occupy the post of general manager of the corporation's municipal-transport undertaking. Before going to St. Helens in July, 1939, as manager and engineer of the corporation's transport department, Le had transport' experience at Nottingham and Sheffield.

MR. HANS RENOLD has had conferred upon him by Manchester University the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa, in recognition of his work in the ' advancement of engineering. He was responsible for the development of the precision chain and now, in his 89th year, is still a director of the Renold and Coventry Chain Co., Ltd. He pays regular visits to the works of which he was the founder. Mr. Hans Renold was born in Switzerland in 1852, came to England in 1873, and became a naturalized British subject in 1881.

OVER 400 GAS-FILLING STATIONS NOW OPEN

A USEFUL list of gas-filling stations .1-1, for gas-driven. vehicles has been issued, under the title of "Gas Filling Stations for Motor Transport," by the British Commercial Gas Association, Gas Industry House, 1, Grosvenor Place, London, S.W.1 (price 2d. plus postage).

It includes details of 430 stations, either at garages or on gas undertakings' property. In many cases, the hours of business are given, and the stations are conveniently grouped in alphabetical order under county headings, blank pages being left for additional entries.

AGREED RATES FOR STONE AND BALLAST IN DEVON MEGOTIATIONS which have, for I 'some time, been in progress between, on the one hand, a concern interested in building operations in Yelverton and, on the other, hauliers and quarry owners in Devon, have now reached a successful conclusion. As the result, a comprehensive schedule of rates for the haulage of stone and ballast has been reached. Pressure of space precludes us from publishing this schedule herewith; it will appear next week.

THORNYCROFT SUCCESSFUL TRADING RESULTS

OUR issue for last week contained a paragraph giving details of the dividends being recommended for payment by the directors of John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., in respect of the year ended July 31, 1940. The company's report for this period is now to hand, and it shows that in the year, the profit amounted to £141,977. As was mentioned, a dividend of 10 per cent. is being paid on the ordinary shares, and this will absorb £30,000, whilst the reserve account receives £67,451, leaving a credit balance of £67,653, compared with £53,877 brought forward.
