• The latest German plan to slap an annual levy on all drivers using its autobahns from 1994 has been slammed by the Freight Transport Association,
"It looks like they're resurrecting their old scheme in a different guise," it says. "It dismantles all the good work which has been made towards a single
market for the movement of goods."
An earlier plan to introduce an annual tax of up to £3,000 payable by all hauliers using German roads — but with German operators compensated by paying less vehicle excise duty — was thrown out by the European Court in May,
