Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN I was extremely concerned to read Sound Off (CM 30 July-5 Aug), because of the totally incorrect impression that is conveyed about the Licensing Authority's attitude towards VED dodgers. My office has followed up the article by speaking to Barry Proctor to clarify what he was previously told. I think it is sufficient for me to say that the person who originally handled his telephone enquiry left my employment in April. The operator about whom he was complaining did not hold a South Eastern and Metropolitan Traffic Area licence.

The comments directly attributed to LA Brigadier Turner in the second paragraph are absolutely correct. He does take clear and positive action against persistent VED dodgers. Such action is evidenced by that taken against Chelsea Waste (CM 13-19 Aug).

If any haulier has evidence of SEMTA operators dodging VED and is prepared to put that evidence in writing to me I can guarantee that it will be followed up: that is already our practice.

D Ryan South Eastern and Metropolitan Traffic Area, Eastbourne, East Sussex.
