• Car transport firms Richard Lawson of Dundee and BRS of Milton Keynes are to share a major contract with Toyota.
They will transport cars from the new Toyota plant at Burnaston, near Derby, to Grimsby for export to the Continent. Richard Lawson will go into action when the plant begins production in January 1993. BRS will join it by early 1994, building up to a 50% share of the work.
Mike Cowey, finance director at Richard Lawson, says that the contract obliges the company to provide new transporters for the work. "The number of vehicles we need will depend on how [Toyota's] volumes build," he says, "but it could involve three to hive new transporters."
On 28 September Richard Lawson starts work for Rover, delivering cars from Longbridge and Cowley to Bathgate and Chester (CM 16-22 July).
Toyota's UK distribution from Derby is being subcontracted to Bristol-based car transporter Walon, which has been handling 40,000 cars a year for the Japanese company since January. Walon, which also has a share in the Rover car distribution network, expects new contracts won this year to boost its turnover by 25%.
