racing championships continued at Silverstone last weeked as Slim Borgudd and Curt Goransson took first and second places in the Multipart Supertruck Trophy race.
Borgudd's White Road Boss II finished almost three seconds ahead of last year's winner, Curt Goransson in his N Series Volvo. Borgudd led throughout the race, and was rarely troubled by Goransson.
Third was Heinz Dehnhardt in a Mercedes-Benz 1644S. Highest-placed Briton was Rod Chapman who was fourth past the flag, 18 seconds behind Borgudd, in the lower powered Iveco Ford Cargo Lb.
Richard Walker and Willie Green came fifth and sixth in their mid-power trucks, over 20 seconds behind Borgudd.
Grid positions for the race were decided by practice times because most of the championship races were run over a reduced number of laps. This caused disappointment for Willie Green who recorded poor practice times but fared well in the championship races for his power class. With 11th position on the grid Green had little chance of catching the top-power Swedes who started Tony Pond (27) collides with Henry Shepherd (92) directly in front of the grandstand at last weekend's Multipart Supertruck Trophy meeting in pole positions.
Borgudd has dominated the top-power class this season, but failed to beat Goransson in either of the championship races for the 269-372kW power class. Goransson won both legs, ahead of Borgudd and Dehnhardi In the mid-power (225268kW) class there was a heated contest between Willie Green, Richard Walker and George Allen. In both legs Willie Green came out on top with Walker second and Allen third, but this disguises the drama on the track where all three vehicles fought bumper to bumper. In the second leg George Allen snatched the lead on the final lap but braked too late on the final chicane a matter of metres from the finishing line to incur a tensecond penalty.
The second leg in the class had to be re-started after a serious crash in front of the grandstand involving Tony Pond's Leyland Roadtrain and Henry Shepherd's ERF. Their trucks collided, sending Pond spinning across the track and Shepherd into the Armco, ripping off his door.
H During the meeting it was announced that Curt Goransson is set to drive a brand new truck next season. According to the public address system at Silverstone his new Volvo, which will be specially altered to his racing requirements, will be an F16 . . .
