Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• National Freight Consortium's Regional Group is due to be scrapped on 1 September in a move which triggers the rationalisation of NFC's operations in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Two of the member companies, Scottish Road Services and Northern Ireland Carriers, will come under the control of BRS, while Scottish Parcels Services will merge with the Lynx Delivery Network (CM 6-12 August).

Ron Irons, currently managing director of NFC Distribution Group, will take over at BRS Group to become responsible for both Scottish Road Services and Northern Ireland Carriers. Graham Roberts, managing director of Lynx Delivery Network, will take responsibility for Scottish Parcels Services.

NFC is remaining tight lipped about the changes, saying only that it wants to notify all those affected. It is clear, however, that the reorganisation will result in a number of changes in responsibility. For example, John Copland, currently managing director of Regional Group and chairman of Scottish Road Services, will be relinquishing some of his responsibilities.

All three Regional Group operations enjoy reputations for being 'local' companies in their particular areas of operation, so it will be interesting to see whether BRS and Lynx decide to retain their regional identities.

This week Scottish Road Services announces its biggest order ever (Business News Page 11).

▪ Last year NFC Regional Group made a profit of £300,000 on a turnover of £35.1 million.
