• Growing interest among brewers in drawbar combinations is reflected in the BTAC (Brewery Transport Advisory Committee) decision to introduce a drawbar category in this year's MIRA fuel economy trials.
The trials will be held at the Motor Industry Research Association proving ground near Nuneaton on Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 September. They are organised jointly by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers and BTAC, and competitors aim not only for the lowest fuel economy in their class, but also the best "payload earning factor", which takes into account average speed and payload.
Vehicles are categorised by gross weight and according to whether they are entered by a manufacturer or operator. There is also an "unrestricted" entry class which caters for experimental vehicles such as the Cummins-powered Volvo F10 which attracted so much attention at last year's trials.
BTAC expects about 45 vehicles to take part in this year's trials and some of them could indicate the manufacturers most likely to benefit from brewers' orders following Bedford's withdrawal from the truck market.
Entry forms and more information are available from the BTAC. Would-be competitors should contact the secretary, Bill Montague, on (04024) 71376.
