• Scottish Road Services has won one of the largest distribution contracts ever placed in Scotland, in a new deal with Gateway Food markets.
The million, five-year contract involves the distribution of dry goods from Gateway's central warehousing complex in East Kilbride to 66 stores in Scotland.
SRS has bought several Gateway vehicles and plans to take on a "substantial number of drivers, engineers and clerical staff' from Gateway for the launch of the contract on 21 September.
Sales and Marketing manager Tom West says contract distribution has taken far longer to be accepted in Scotland than in England; but he is hopeful the new contract will set a trend for this type of business north of the border. John Wilson, who has worked for SRS for several years, has been appointed as operations manager for the contract, which is the company's largest contract to date.
SRS will operate a fleet of 48 vehicles (of which at least seven will be brand new) and 86 trailers, on the contract. Chairman John Copland says, "A combination of Gateway's retailing skills and growth aspirations with our transport and distribution expertise should provide a platform for an exciting and mutually beneficial future."
