Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• At a public sitting in Sheffield on Tuesday, the chairman of the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, Maj-Gen. Sir John Potter, gave Sheffield Corporation Transport Department authorization to increase fares throughout its stage carriage network.

Objections to the application were lodged by Chesterfield RDC, Rotherham RDC, Wortley RDC and Maltby UDC. Objections by Derbyshire county council and Chesterfield RDC were withdrawn before the hearing.

Evidence given in support of the application indicated that unless the application was granted the transport department would be faced later this year with an estimated loss of £1,167,000. However, this did not take into account economies to the value of £317,000 which were made by the department and other sums which were taken from the vehicle replacement fund., The increases are the first granted to Sheffield transport department since September 8, 1970, when the company was granted an increase which was expected to realize an additional £905,000. But, because of wage increases and other unforeseen problems, the amount was only an increase in revenue of £825,000.

LDOY grants

• The RTITB has now informed CM that each day which qualifies for points in the grant-earning scheme, for operators who enter the 1972 Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, will be equivalent to five points and not four as stated in our August 6 issue.

Dennis axles

• We have been asked by Dennis to state that they have been using Eaton 18200 series axles for at least a year, contrary to a statement published in a news item in CM dated July 23.
