• What was described as one of the largest fares applications to come before the Traffic Commissioners in any area, was successful last week when the North Western Traffic Commissioners granted SELNEC PTE permission to revise its fares, increasing its weekly income by some £40,000.
Sixteen local authorities in the Greater Manchester Area and one city, Salford, objected to the application. The chairman of the Commissioners, Mr C. R. Hodgson, commended SELNEC PTE Which had reduced its application by £ lin after consultations with Ministry officials in
London and after the recent wages restraint appeal to industry from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The objection to the increase was that SELNEC was not introducing the half-penny. This criticism was answered by SELNEC who said that it would take six weeks to modify and in the meantime the company would lose a total of £300,000 in addition to the shortfall of Lim which was expected in 1971.
Granting the application. Mr Hodgson said he thought the increase to be not unreasonable in view of the fact that inflation had brought extra wage demands and a leap in prices. The new fares are to take effect from August 29.
