• A mammoth bus-lift is being mounted by the South Wales Transport Co Ltd for the British Association for the Advancement of Science meetings at Swansea next month, whose members will travel widely over South Wales in pursuit of their various scientific interests.
Nearly 2000 people are expected to attend the meetings, including many of the world's top scientists, and the Swanseabased NBC subsidiary has undertaken the task of transporting them by coaches on a wide-ranging programme of excursions. A total of 85 excursions, extending to Cardiff and Pembrokeshire, is planned for the period of the conference, September 1 to September 8.
An interesting feature of the excursions is that many will also be available to members of the public, with arrangements being made for bookings almost until the last minute. Consequently, company officials are unable to say how many coaches will be needed.
SWI' tours superintendent, Mr Frank Haines, said "Many months of planning have gone into this hefty and complex operation. Many of the excursions will be over roads and into parts of Wales not normally used for tours purposes with the result that we have had to survey the routes selected".
Special booking arrangements are being Made in the conference reception area at the University College of Swansea where SWT clerks will be on duty, one to a table for each day of the week. An official of the company will also be on hand to deal with the organization.
Parking the large number of coaches will also be a carefully planned operation to ensure smooth departures from the college car park alongside Mumbles Road. Coaches will be marked by code letters for the different sections. There will also be packed lunches for the full-day field excursions on the Saturday and Sunday, the two busiest days for the coach operators.
