A. PRELIMINARY inspection has indiLa cated that there are no techrtical drawbacks to a scheme for a two-way tracked. bus route with lay-by stopping points along the Rochdale Canal from Manchester to Oldham.
A four-wheel, dual-purpose bus that will run along concrete channels over the canal and function normally when leaving the track near Oldham for the public road is suggested.
_ The system of travel is being developed by Airways Transport lid., of London, SWI. whose representative, Mr, J. Russell. made the inspection with Mr. C. R. Morris (Labour MP for Openshaw) and Mr. C. Mapp (Labour, Oldham East).
-A report will be submitted to Manchester Corporation. Failsworth 111X% C'hadderton UDC. Oldham Corporation. l.ancashire County Council and the Rochdale Canal company with a view to the cal sing out of a detailed feasibility survey to which the latter has agreed.
The first indications are that cost is the main obstacle to overcome in respect of the locks and the work necessary in connection with bridges. The primary objective of the new service would be to ease travel for commuters, hut probably shopping traffic would also be needed to make the line economic.
