CLOSE-COUPLED four-wheeled running gear using independent torsional suspension units has been chosen by Tollbridge Trailers Ltd., of Lymington. Hants, for an acid-carrying trailer presenting particular design problems. Similar models with load capacities up to 6 tons can be built to order.
The trailer (illustrated here) is used to transport over 400 gal, of concentrated sulphuric acid, the internal glass tank being clad in steel. The tank is mounted on a chassis of rolled, rust-proofed steel with welded and separately rust-proofed joints.
An overrun braking system operates through a rod linkage to 10 in. drums and there is a handbrake as well as a reversing lock for the mechanical overrun brake. Fittings include a telescopic jockey wheel, ring coupling, and number plate/lighting units which include direction indicator lamps.
Accident Convention: The Minister of Transport will open the convention on road accidents which is being held by the Institution of Municipal Engineers on November 3 at Central Hall. Westminster. Papers will include one on "the factors contributing to accidents: roads, vehicles, people ", this being prepared jointly by Mr. I. S. Orme. Mr. H. Perring and Mr. J. L. Paisley—all from the Ministry of Transport.
