Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MEE entry of the Scott parcelcar into the commercial1 motor field reminds us of the modern tendency for University graduates to engage in industry, to the distinct advantage of both.

The Scott Motor Cycle Co., Ltd., of Saltaire, Shipley, Yorks, has for .21 years built motorcycles of the highest grade, and was the pioneer of the two-stroke-cycle type of power unit, which remains the simplest form of internalcombustion engine. It is of more than usual interest, therefore, to review the company's latest product, and we can say at once that it bears the stamp of quality and has every evidence of the most careful design.

Lt-general outline the machine resembles the popular and useful box tricycle, but here the similarity ends. The main chassis is a well-conceived job constructed of

diameter I4G steel tube, within which the whole of the power and driving mechanism is housed, the engine and gearbox being mounted on an easily removable sub-frame; the final drive by chain also lies within the chassis.

The engine is horizontally disposed with the cylinder head pointing forward, where it receives a full current of air for cooling purposes, whilst it Can easily be removed to , allow decarbonization to be effected without interfering with any other component or joint.

The magneto and mechanical oil pump are mounted in a most accessible position on a bracket above the engine, the magneto being driven by chain and the oiling mechanism by an arm from the magneto sprocket. Immediately aft is a cylindrical tank, which is capable of holding 2/ gallons of

petrol and I gallon of oil, the container being ingeniously mounted on the saddle tube which passes through it and forms its support.

The clutch control is mounted on the left-hand footboard, and the brake pedal is fitted on the right-hand side of the machine and operates internal-expanding brakes (7. ins, in diameter at the front and 8 ins, at the rear), which are fully compensated.

The ratchet hand-brake lever is located on the right-hand side and to the rear of the drive. It operates the frontwheel brakes only and, incidentally, prevents the steerable box from being moved when the vehicle is left standing. Throttle control is by a twist grip on the steering bar at the rear of the box, and, finally, the magneto and extra-air controls are 'fitted in a convenient position to the magneto bracket. Once set, these devices do not in the ordinary way call for attention.

, The capacious box is mounted upon a strong rectangular frame of 2-in. section, to which, in turn, is bolted a large casting, rotatably connected to the front of the tubular main chassis and incorporating a steering damper of ingenious design. Half-elliptic springs with shackles at the forward end carry the tubular front axle, which has a trail of 2 ins.

Equipped with a Scott 3 b.p. air-cooled engine, geared at 7.2 to 1 on top, and carrying a load of 2i. cwt., driver (150 lb.) and full tanks, the vehicle has reached 45 m.p.h., and at a speed of 15 m.p.h. has climbed a gradient of 1 in 4.1, proving the more-than-ample power possessed by this sturdy three-wheeler.

By lowering the gear ratio the maker intends to reduce the maximum speed of the machine and increase its capacity for climbing, although with the present ratio the vehicle, on top gear, is extraordinarily easy to handle in traffic. Petrol, according to the load which is being carried and the speed of the vehicle, is consumed at a rate of a gallon for every 40 to 50 miles covered. The load capacity of the machine is 3 cwt, and the box which is illustrated is 4 ft. long, 3 ft. wide and 2 ft. 4 ins. deep. The chassis price is £70, whilst with an open-truck body the vehicle sells at the moderate price of £74; the cost of a machine of the type illustrated is £80. An extra charge is made for electric-lighting equipment, as well as for painting and lettering.

The organization which is responsible for the sale of the Scott parcelear is S.A.V. Light Oars, Ltd., of Shipley, Yorks, the London office of this• concern being at 23, . Tavistock Square, London, W.C.1.
