Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ATthe Royal Agricultural Show held at Harrogate in July the Associated Manufacturers' Co. (London), Ltd., of Wharfdale 'Road, London, N.1, exhibited for the first time a new Case L-type 26-40 h.p. tractor, and a reference to it was made in our issue dated July 9th,

The company now announces that a new C-type 12-20 h.p. model, constructed on similar lines to the L-type, will in the course of the next few weeks be available in this country.

The new tractor has a fourcylindered overhead-valve engine set longitudinally inatead of transversely, as before, and the final drive is transmitted from the differential gear to the axle shafts by two chains which are adjustable. Chain drive has the advantage that several teeth are engaged at one time, thus distributing the driving stresses more equally than is the case with the gear type of transmission. It also affords a more flexible connection between the gearbox and the ground wheels.

In the new Case tractor the final drive is fully enclosed, so that it is thoroughly lubricated and protected against the ill-effects of dirt. Another advantage is that it enables a considerable saving in weight, to be effected. The L-type machine with fuel and water weighs only 43 cwt., so that it is nearly one ton lighter and 50 per cent. more powerful than its well

J326 known prototype in the same class.

The weight of the new C-type tractor is about 30 cwt. The engine has a bore of 31 ins, and a stroke of 51, ins.,the normal engine sped being 1,100 r.p.m. The cylinder sleeves are renewable, and the three-bearing crankshaft is 21 ins. in diameter. As in the bigger model, pressure lubrication is arranged.

The gearbox, which, together with the crankcase and rear-axle casting, constitutes the frame of the machine,

provides three forward ratios and one reverse, • the -forward speeds being. approximately 2i-, 31 and 411m.p.h. The wheelbase of this model is 5 ft. 6 ins., the front wheels being 2 ft: 4 ins, and the rear wheels 3 ft. 6 ins, in diameter, and -the machine turns in acircle of 10-ft. radius.

The C-type and L-type Case tractors in their new form constitute two very useful machines for agricultural purposes.
