Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Britain's international hauliers face a new rail-borne threat when the Chunnel opens, following the expected launch this October of an Anglo-Continental freight service using specially developed wagons which, for the first time, will accommodate most full-size European containers on Britain's railways.

Railfreight will use smallwheeled (520nun) bogies on flat-bed wagons to give a loading height of just 700nun. This will enable it to carry containers which are 24nun wider and higher than was previously possible on the British railway network.

Cardiff transport designer Powell Duffryn Wagon Company claims to have overcome the problem of hot bogie wheels by placing the wheel bearings on the inside of the wheels, and by using solid wheels fitted with disc brakes.

The system is now undergoing a six-month trial, after which Railfreight plans to put three wagons in to service under the Freightliner banner. It is planned that the container system will operate from a network of regional depots into Europe, first by ferry and later by the Channel Tunnel.
