• Government proposals to divide passenger-transportauthority-owned bus companies have been attacked by the Greater Manchester and West Midlands PTAs.
Both organisations claim competition is thriving in their areas and division would lead to higher fares, fewer routes, increased overheads and job losses. Smaller bus firms would be susceptible to takeover from larger private companies, they warn. Guy Harkin, chairman of the GMPTA which owns Greater Manchester Buses says breakup would lead to chaos in Manchester bus services. He says: `"The PTA will fight tooth and nail to maintain GM Buses in its present form. Our message is clear — hands off GM Buses."
