concrete motorway and road bridges following the publication of the Maunsell Report, published at Westminster on Tuesday (18 April). It warns that some £880 million needs to be spent on repairing Britain's road bridges.
It also calls for more regular inspection and better maintenance; the replacement or repair of damaged expansion joints and improved waterproofing systems.
Transport Minister Peter Bottomley says that a great proportion of the recommended expenditure had already been anticipated in a 15-year bridge rehabilitation programme announced in November 1987, but adds: "That programme is being reviewed to determine how much more needs to be spent and on what timescale."
