• Abel Demount Systems has adapted the lifting assembly on its demount body system to conform to Philips-concept dimensions foi Durham haulier Barnfather.
To achieve a 1.03m deck height similar to that of a fixed body. ADS has redesigned its pneumatic bellows type lift pack and re-sited the doubleconvolute bellows outside the chassis rails on outriggers.
Above the chassis longitudinals the vertically pivotting bridge plate linking the bellows is cut away so that when they are deflated the bridge lifting face is only 8mm above the frame.
It is claimed to he more stable when lifting and, as the bellows are 1,335min apart, the design has a greater roll resistance when laden, high C of G bodies are being demounted.
As well as using low-profile 275/80R 22.5 tyres on the Leyland Daf 2100 rigid with its modified (slimmed down) cab, the Abel main body support frame has been altered for Barnfather's operation. Its retractable demount cones and twistlocks are now built into outrigged structures instead of full-width bolsters across the top of the frame.
Air suspension on the trailer gives the lift to demount the rear body.
A Pietz PAL-TM coupling tailored for centre bogie (rigid A-frame) trailers is installed below the truck chassis and extends and withdraws its coupling jaw when cornering.
With only 280mm between truck and De Rooy trailer, the Northern Assemblies-bodied combination has a 16.15m (53ft) total deck length within its 18m overall limit and attains a 2.97m load space height within the 4.0m Continental height limit.
Barntather can thus carry 16 metric pallets loads of light bulky products in each curtainsider body, both being set to ISO spaced twistlock mountings.
