Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE CONDITION of brand new commercial vehicles is Improving.

This is the conclusion of the Freight Transport Association, drawn from the new vehicle inspections. In 1978 this FTA service inspected 541 new vehicles and found an average of 7.83 defects per vehicle. This compares with 9.7 defects per vehicle in 1977.

More significantly, only one of these defects, on average, would justify a GV9 prohibition notice, says the FTA. The most frequent GV9 faults were braking defects, followed by electrical malfunctions. Overall, the most common faults found were connected with poor or incorrect paintwork.

The vehicles examined by the FTA came from 12 UK and five Continental manufacturers.

Faults found by the FTA are notified and discussed with the relevant manufacturer by the Association's liaison committees.
