TIFIE Construction and Use Regula tions will, as from June 1, he amended to allow all public service vehicles registered on or after July 1 to be built to a maximum overall length of 30 ft. Four-wheeled double-deckers registered before July I may be 27 ft. long.
The maximum laden weight of a fourwheeled public service vehicle is to be raised from 12 to 14 tons, and the maximum axle weight from 8 to 9 tons.
These changes, forecast by the Minister of Transport some time ago, aremade in the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Regulations, 1956, which come into force on June 1.
REHEARD CASE SUCCEEDS
AFTER the case had been sent back for rehearing after an appeal, the Northern Deputy Licensing Authority last week granted a licence for two vehicles to W. G. Thomas and Co, Ltd., Middlesbrough. The deputy Authority, Mr. G. W. Duncan. did not call upon Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for the Thomas concern, after hearing the evidence of the British Transport Commission.
Mr. Wardlaw submitted that Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, the Licensing Authority, and not Mr. Duncan, should have taken the re-hearing. This Was "quite definite from the decision of the Transport Tribunal.
The case had been sent back so that the Authority could hear ,:vidence cf alternative facilities.

The only defence for private interests in the haulage industry lay in collective security. Any haulage contractor who failed to join the R.14.A. "ought to have his head examined,said Sir Frederick.
NYLON TARPAULINS MEW types of nylon tarpaulin will be
seen at the Factory Equipment Exhibition at Earls Court, London, from April 9-14, and the Industrial Textiles Exhibition. Royal Albert Hall, London, from April 23-27. Production of nylon tarpaulins is expected to be substantial by the end of this year.
A plastics-proofed nylon tarpaulin weighing 14 oz. per sq. yd. is stated to be equivalent to a flax tarpaulin proofed with linseed oil weighing 2 lb. per sq. yd. Nylon-reinforced tyres for vehicles are being developed.
