'Lord Haldane, in his speech on t he Estimates, announced that the transport of the Expeditionary .Force, including ammunition, 'avould be conveyed in motor vehicles. The fighting force alone, she stated, according to war establishment, required 1,297 carts and (6,067 wagons, besides the transport required for lines of communication. These vehicles conveyed

:about 8,300 tons. If in future the trst echelon of the transport is to :be conveyed in three-ton lorries, :and the second echelon in road trains drawn by traction engines, each conveying 18 tons, there -would be required on mobilization 1,442 motor lorries and 239 -Fond '

Mr. H. G. Burford, M.I.Mech.E., M.I.A.E., has been again elected Hon. Treasurer of the S./I/JILT. Messrs. Albert Brown, 1). Citroen, E. Gaseoine, and F. W. Shorland, together with the Hon. Treasurer, have been appointed a Finance Committee.

Shrewsbury-Challir. er Extensions in London.

We learn that the pneumatic-tire branch of the Shrewsbury -Challiner business is growing so satisfactorily, that it has been necessary considerably to extend the company's London showrooms, which are situated at Page Street, Westminster, S. \V. Complete repair plant has also been established at this Ilep C M.U.A.

The next meeting oi the General C.ommittee of the C.M.U.A. will take place on Wednesday, the 3rd prox., at two o'clock, and not at the usual hourt hree o'clock. This is to avoid clashing with certain other committee meetings which are fixed for the same afternoon, particularly with the preliminary conference in regard to lire organization of the International Road Congress in 'London for the year 1913, at the Inst. C. E.

We are asked to announce that the prizes offered by the County of London Territorial 'Force Association, in connection with the WhitMonday Parade, are for competition amongst drivers serving in the Mechanical Transport Sections of the Army Service Corps, Terntonal Force.

The Canada Cycle and Motor Agency (Queensland), Ltd., of Bnsbane, has received a record of a typical month's running of an Albion lorry in the service of Messrs. Williamson and Co., a firm of merchants who are well known throughout Queensland, and this has been put before us. The daily mileages, for 25 running days, have averaged 83; the daily ranges varied between 40 and 160. Having regard to local conditions, this is a highly-creditable performance.

French Army Trials.

This year's French military truck competition, or, as it would be more correct to term it, endurance test, will take place from the 18th July to the 11th August. For the first time, the test will be entirely military, being organized by the army for the army, without any assistance from the technical or other commissions of the Automobile Club of France. The event is intended as a test of the vehicles offered as eligible for the army subsidy, and is not a competition in the ordinary sense of the word, for it is possible for all vehicles to be successful in winning the right to apply for the army grant. As usual, the test will take place from some common centre near Paris—in all probability Versailles, the vehicles being sent out each day under full load, light, or in convoys, with an official control of all fuel and lubricating oil consumed, the judgment of the authorities being based on regularity and economy of operation. Petrol, berizol and alcohol will be used as fuels. Each model can be represented by two trucks only, although the number of models entered by any one firm is not limited.

The importance attached by French manufacturers to securing the privilege of applying for army subsidies is shown by the fact that 58 trucks have been entered. The firms represented are : Malicet and Blin, Peugeot, Saurer (Suresnes), Berliet, Renault, Delahaye, Latil, Delaugere-Clayette, and de DionBouton with two models each ; Purrey, with three models ; Schneider, Bayard-Clement, Dietrich, and Vermorel with one model each. Most of the firms have taken part in previou's army competitions. The newcomers are Renault, Purrey, Bayard-Clernent, and Vermorel. The Renault factory, which has not previously taken part in any commercial-vehicle competition, will present two shaft-driven five-ton trucks and two three-ton models, also shaft driven.
