Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Tesco's decision to ban drivers from their cabs while their vehicles are being unloaded is causing concern, to put it mildly. Sally Nash reports.

BARRIE TOZER, who runs www.truckersworld.co.uk, has written to Tesco boss Sir Terry Leahy over the supermarket's decision to ban drivers from their cabs while being unloaded.

Tozer is one of a number of industry insiders infuriated by Tesco's new health and safety policy, which means drivers have to hand over their keys and get out of their cabs while being unloaded.

"We all support any health and safety initiative that safeguards workers, but absolutely no consideration has been given to the trucker, who has got to vacate his vehicle and wait in intolerable rest rooms with access to poor facilities," says Tozer.

According to Tesco, changes were made following an accident at one of its regional distribution centres (RDC,$), (CM 28 July).

Tozer is also concerned by recent reports that some canteens and other facilities are out of bounds to drivers. He was given assurances last year by Tesco's primary distribution director John Boulter that there would be "immediate improvements to drivers' facilities at RDCs", (CM 4 March 2004). A list of targets included allowing drivers to use canteens at sites.

Tozer has already e-mailed David Potts, Tesco's retail and logistics director, but had not received a response as CM went to press. Now he is taking his concerns toTesco's chief executive. keep chasing this up because it has got to be sorted out," says Tozer. "A year ago, I was promised the canteens would be available to all drivers, but it seems it varies from centre to centre and is down to individual managers." A spokeswoman for Tesco insists there are rest areas for drivers at all distribution centres. She also says it was important for Tesco to put safeguarding measures in place to ensure the safety of staff and drivers.
