Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The first system in the UK giving LGV drivers minute-by-minute advice on their choice of route is to go into full operation later this year between the M25 and the Channel Tunnel.

The system, based on variable message signs coupled with closed-circuit TV cameras, will give drivers heading for the Channel Tunnel or Dover or Folkestone docks, up-to-date information on traffic flow on the M2, M20 and M25.

The police control room at Maidstone takes possession of the equipment this week and will be able to flash up messages on chosen gantries. These will advise drivers to continue on the motorway or take other routes. The signs will also be able to delay warnings and offer advice on emergency parking facilities for LGVs.

Preliminary studies point to a 10% reduction in congestion on the motorways as a result of these new signs. There are plans to expand the scheme to include advice on Channel crossings should the Tunnel or ports at Dover and Folkestone be closed.

Kent Police get routeing signs.

• Drivers have slowed an average 8mph as a result of speed cameras on the M1 which have flashed up the registration number and speed of offending drivers on the northbound carriageway of the motorway at junction 21A in Leics since May. The signs, which also relay registration numbers to the county's police headquarters, have not been used to prosecute drivers.

Up in lights: drivers on M1 have slowed.
