Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

still under wraps

• Is Cummins working on a diesel engine suitable for 3.5tonne GVW operation in the UK? The engine company certainly has a unit that is suitable for this type of operation, in the A-series unit, currently sold and manufactured in North America. Cummins has had access to the engine since it acquired the US Onan Corporation about 18 month ago.

This unit is already used by Ford in Venezuela, and is available in a variety of types. The indirect-injection unit has a capacity of around 0.6 litres per cylinder, which gives the four-cylinder unit a capacity of 2.4 litres, and the six-cylinder unit a capacity of 3.6 litres.

It comes in naturallyaspirated, turbocharged and turbo-intercooler forms, and a UK specification model would be turbocharged.

Commercial Motor understands that Cummins is currently trying to prepare this engine for UK markets, and "wrestling with the product requirements".

The company is unlikely to introduce the engine without a customer for it, and so a market niche would have to be open before the UK sees it.
