• The first two of the new Leyland Olympians being bodied by Leyland at Workington have been delivered to Isle of Man Transport. They are the first new buses the -nationalised transport company has bought for 11 years and the first new double-deckers on the island for 20 years.
Isle of Man Transport has relied on buying secondhand double-deckers during the past few years. The 42 doubledeckers in its fleet, which were acquired from Merseyside and IGreater Manchester PTEs, are to be gradually replaced with mew vehicles.
Robert Smith of the Isle of Man Transport Executive, says ithat the vehicles are part of a 'package of improvements. "We 'will be carefully monitoring itheir performance with a view Ito purchasing more new vehi(cies next year," he says. Six Olympians have been ordered: the remaining four should be delivered by the end of next month. They will be finished in the company's new red and cream livery and one vehicle will be fitted with coach seats to.make it available for Eivate hire.
il Colchester Borough Transport has also ordered an Olympian to join four similar vehicles in its fleet.
