FOLLOWING recent increases in its UK light commercial vehicle sales, Peugeot Talbot plans to introduce a front-wheel drive light van based on the Peugeot 205 hatchback car early next year.

The new van will be selling in direct competition to the Ford Fiesta and Austin Metro 310 vans, and will be based on the 205 three-door body shell due to be launched at the Motor Show in October.

Final specification for the 1/2ton payload van has yet to be announced, although the 36kW(49bhpl, 1,124cc ohc and 44kW(59bhp), 1,360cc ohc petrol engines currently offered in the existing 205 car range seems a likely choice of power unit. The 44kW(59bhp) 1,769cc ohc diesel engine fitted to the 205 grd model could also provide direct competition to Ford's 1.6Iitre in

direct injection diesel powered Fiesta van.

Peugeot is looking to expand further into the UK light commercial vehicle market, and has announced changes to its current 305 van and 504 pick-up. The estate car based 305 van will now be offered in a highspecification GL version with cloth covered seats, radio and tailgate wash/wipe as standard. The standard 305 van will also be slightly upgraded. Both the GL and base model 305 vans will continue to be fitted with either the 1,472cc petrol or 1,905cc diesel engines.

Diesel 305 vans will now be fitted with a five-speed synchromesh gearbox as standard with a fifth gear overdrive ratio of 0.75:1.

Peugeot's 504 pick-up now has electronic ignition on petrol engined versions, while instrumentation has also been upgraded on both petrol and diesel models, which now have black painted bumpers, a ladder rack and laminated windscreen fitted as standard.
