FODEN TRUCKS has been awarded a contract by the Ministry of Defence to supply 333 of its Heavy Recovery Vehicles to the British Army. Delivery is scheduled to begin in mid-1985.

The vehicle has been developed to meet the stringent requirements of the British Army and completes a family of vehicles providing a high degree of commonality of parts and major assemblies. Designed for highway and cross-country operation, the 6 x 6 drive chassis is fitted with the Perkins Eagle engine, Fuller main gearbox and GKN (Kirkstall) axles and a transfer gearbox. The cab is the new Foden 510 grp military type with roof cupola and machine gun mounting facilities. A 10tonne drum winch is fitted to the front of the vehicle and can be used for self recovery.

The recovery unit is supplied by Eka of London and is its compact model AK6500-EA12 which embodies a 12.5-tonne capacity slewing train complete with side ,stabilizers and includes a support towing facility which is capable of recovering all the British Army's in-service logistic support and armoured wheeled vehicles.

The unit also incorporates a 25 tonne main winch and rear ground anchoring spades. All functions are hydraulically operated. Stowage is provided for all supporting recovery equipment.

This order consolidates Foden Trucks' position as a major supplier of wheeled vehicles to the British Army and follows a recent order for more 8 x 4 tankers and the successful completion and supply of 8 x 6 vehicles for evaluation trials by the MoD as part of the proposed DROPS and RTE ammunition resupply system.

The MoD requires all Foden vehicles to be designed and manufactured to the British defence standard of quality assurance 05-21.
