CM's Lorry Driver of the Year competition must number amongst the most important single factors in the promotion of road safety. In this, the 25th year of the competition, 3,100 of those drivers eligible to enter did so.
During these 25 years, almost 70,000 drivers have entered the event at centres as far apart as Cornwall, Aberdeen, Londonderry, and Kent. This means that, as a result of our competition, 75,000 drivers have driven accident-free for one year—an achievement that does great credit to the industry.
The awards in the competition have been described as -modestin view of the high standard demanded. That there is no financial gain can only underline that those who enter do so more out of public spirit than pot hunting.
The thousands of volunteers who give their services free to the event are worthy of the highest commendation. The trade and training associations and the trade unions who support it earn the gratitude of the entrants.
The event is now spreading in Europe and continues to grow at home. The late Alderman Brain of Coventry, who started it back in 1954, will be remembered whenever road safety is considered important.
