• Over £90,000 has been spent by National Carriers Ltd on .making its Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, depot the nerve centre for its freight service throughout most of Kent.
Maidstone's fleet, consisting of more than 140 vehicles, now collects and delivers all over the country except in the extreme South East. As part of the rationalization scheme the smaller depots at Rochester and Margate have been closed, while Ashford and Tonbridge remain open for special services only.
Work at Maidstone has included the building of a completely new shed for collected traffic, together with alterations to the existing building to speed delivery handling. There is also a new office block.
