Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T IMAGINE Mrs. Castle will be delighted to hear that the Nottingham branch of TGWU wants BRS to channel all road movements from the Stanton and Staveley works (CM, last week). Only approved firms who had signed agreements with the union would be eligible to carry traffic and BRS would reap a modestly • lucrative sub-contracting commission.

If this idea catches on nationally—not only in nationalized steel the NFO could conceivably be profitable very soon after its constitution.

Odd that BRS and the local RHA district office knew nothing of

the move. I gather that the informal liaison machinery between RHA and trade union district officers has not functioned well since the National Negotiating Committee hit rough water.

Ray Thorpe, TGWU district organizer, tells me local hauliers don't want to know about productivity schemes at the moment. "Wait till next year when the hours reduction legislation is through", he said. "They'll all come running to me then."
