TWO new safety blankets are now available in the UK. Both are made from a new super-insulation metallind plastic material, Astrolon, discovered during US space research. One of the blankets reflects up to 80 per cent of natural body heat, making it 10 times warmer than wool, pound for pound. It is waterproof, windproof and gives full protection against strong sunlight, heat or any other climatic conditions, as a CM test proved. It is tough, with an almost permanent life. It is also washable, stitchable, and will not crack, mildew or rot. Comfortable to use and attractive in appearance, the blanket comes in four colours: luxurious silver, marine blue, camper red, and olive drab—and two sizes: 56in by 84in (folding to a compact 8in by 5--in pack and weighing only 1 loz); and 56in by 391n (8oz). Both wipe clean with a damp cloth.
The other blanket—the "NRC Rescue Blanket"—reflects over 90 per cent of natural body heat and has been designed specifically as a first-aid or emergency precaution. It could be a life-saver if carried in drivers' first-aid kits—and, of course, in ambulances.
The Rescue Blanket is made of polyester film coated on both sides with metal by vacuum deposition and has mirror-like surfaces. Due to oxidation of the metal its life could be relatively short when exposed to atmospheric conditions. So it must be kept sealed—as packed—until required for once-only short-term use. Colours are silver or high-visibility orange (for detecting in snow). The pack measures 4in by 2-12-in by lin and weighs only 2oz. But when unfolded the blanket is a full 84in by 56in size.
