AN APPLICATION for a lapsed 17vehicle B licence in the name of M. Heaslip, of Silvertown, last week prompted some searching questions from deputy Metropolitan LA Mr. C. J. Macdonald.
Mr. A. D. Kelly, son of the licensee, was at first not allowed to speak in support of the application as he had no written authority from his mother. His evidence was accepted when he said he was manager of the business.
He said he had expected to be supported by Mr. Arthur Dakin, a transport consultant, but Mr. Dakin was unable to attend.
Mr. Kelly said the firm had maintenance staff problems and some tipping vehicles were off the road. Tippers were now virtually obsolete for rubbish clearance. "We should have invested in Dumpster equipment a long time ago."
Mr. Macdonald said it appeared the work of nine vehicles had been done by two, plus some contracting. He adjourned the inquiry for evidence of customer need supported by witnesses.
