AL but three of the Big 16 invited by the RHA to attend a September 7 summit conference on Mrs. Castle's licensing proposals have accepted.
Sorry, said the Transport and General Workers Union this week— we cannot attend.
Its reason: the TUC congress is almost upon it.
The SCMU (COMMERCIAL MOTOR, August 18) and ITA (CM, last week) have already declined the invitation.
But the United Road Transport Workers Association will definitely be represented. Aim is to present a united front of opposition to the forget-your-ABC proposals.
But meanwhile there have been significant solo moves.
The TRTA—attending the Summit, of course—has now circularized the astonishing total of 270 trade associations regarding the proposals.
Its aim: to gauge reaction.
Says a TRTA spokesman: "We've already had a representative response, with promises of support for our views."
And the National Conference of Road Transport Clearing Houses (see this page) has come out fighting.
