Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THEpropeller shaft of a lorry was stated in Sheffield last week to have broken off, flown through the air, and struck a pedestrian walking. This was stated when Carl James Madey (21), of Stubbins Caravan Site, Worksop, was given an absolute discharge after being charged with using the lorry when the shaft was in a dangerous condition. Madey pleaded not guilty. His employers, A. J. Peck and Co., Ltd., of Grimesthorpe Road, Sheffield, admitted the offence and were fined 120.

Claiming that he was a driver and not a mechanic, and was not responsible for mechanical defects, Madey said he looked through the driving mirror and saw the shaft flying through the air. It struck the pedestrian on the thigh, and he had to have hospital treatment.
