THE West Midland Traffic Corn' missioners last week approved fares increases for West Bromwich transport department. The chairman of the Commissioners. Mr. J. Else, told the Corporation; "Your fares will still be lower than the general level in the area. This is highly commendable, and something for which the public should be grateful." The Corporation had asked for permission to increase adult fares by fd., workmen's and return fares by Id. and scholars' weekly tickets and other children's fares. The borough treasurer, Mr. William Evans, said that since April, 1960. wage increases had been granted that would cost the undertaking £63,000 a year. The undertaking had to purchass 17 new vehicles, costing £98,000 by the end of 1964. The increases, if granted in full, would yield £75.000 a year.

Huddersfield Get Increases

THE Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, in Leeds last week, granted an application for fares increases by Huddersfield transport department. It was stated that increases in operating costs over the oast three years were such that, unless increases were granted, the depot could not meet its commitments during the current year. There had been three wage awards and two salary increases, which had increased running costs by £45,000, since August, 1958. The general manager. Mr. E. Dyson, said they sought increases of fd. on 2d. and 3d. fares; and Id. on all other fares. It was arso planned to replace scholars' lid. return fares with Id. singles. The undertaking was committed to build up reserves sufficient for the cost of three route extensions, costing £35.000, he said. A trolleybus rebuilding programme would cost £15,000 a year and alterations to works and depots involved a further £100.000.
