CO-ORDINATED SERVICES FOR CARLISLE

The Ribble Company Buys Out Carlisle Operators FMIOLLOWING the recent refusal of the Northern Traffir Commissioners to grant to Carlisle Corporation roadservice licences to permit the establishment of municipal bus services in the city, it is now learnt that Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., of Preston, has arranged to purchase most of the bus undertakings in the city.

Negotiations for the purchase of Carlisle and District Motor Services, Ltd., are reported to be practically completed and, in addition, it is understood that the Ribble company, through the Carlisle and District undertaking, has arranged to acquire the services run by White Star Motors, Ltd., Mr. F. Waugh, Mr. U. Elayton and Mr. R. Vickers.

The arrangements give the Ribble company almost a monopoly of the city services. In fact, it is understood that the only services outside the proposed merger are Mr. G. Bristow's Durdar and Blackwell lines and Messrs. Simpson and Thompson's services on the Botcherby routes.

It will be recalled that, amongst references made in The Commercial Motor to this important case, a full explanation of the relative circumstances was given in our issue dated July 7th, on page 728, and a brief note on the above arrangements appeared last week.

The general purposes committee of Carlisle Corporation met a few days ago to consider the question of abandoning the present tramway system, as well as to discuss the future of the city's transport system. On that occasion representatives of the Ribble company, acting on their own behalf as well as for their associated companies, the Caledonian Omnibus Co., Ltd., Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., and United Automobile Services, Ltd., gave the committee an outline of the scheme which the companies propose submitting to the Traffic Commissioners.

Carlisle City Council has agreed to support the Ribble proposals and to accept, gubject to the approval of the Minister of Transport, £3,500 for road reinstatement in connection with tramway abandonment.
