In his 1924-25 report the county surveyor of Northampton mentions the fact that six steam wagons purchased in 1919 were regularly at work up to December 31st, from which date two were laid up and one licensed for three months only, pending their sale. These three wagons have since been sold.
The total quantity of all kinds of material dealt with by the vehicles was 29,089 tons, at a cost of £4,047 19s. 5d. The quantity of material hauled by contractors was 34,769 tons, at a cost of £5,190 15s. 7d. • The following table shows the comparative cost of haulage of materials under contract and by the council's own wagons, the top line giving the statistics for the former method and the bottom line those for the latter:—
