by Sharon Clancy • Citroen is introducing an upgraded version of its XUD 1.9-litre indirectinjection diesel engine on Berlingo and Dispatch vans and is increasing service intervals for all engines.
Development of the 14year-old XUD engine was needed to meet EC96/69, which comes into effect on 1 October. The upgraded XUD engine, called the DW8, replaces the 60 and 71hp engine in Berlingo and Dispatch vans. It still develops 71hp, but peak torque is increased from 120Nm at 2,000rpm to 125Nm at 2,50Orpm.
Improved filtration and the use of semi-synthetic oil extend service intervals across the range. For DW8-powered vans and the C15 Champ, they rise from 6,000 to 10.000 miles. On Relays with the 2.5-litre DI engine, intervals increase from 10,000 to 12,500 miles.
At the same time three extra models have been added to the Berlingo range: a no-frills van, a 1.4-litre petrol version for conversion to CNG (compressed natural gas) operation, and an electrically powered model.
The electric Berlingo has a claimed range of 60 miles with a top speed of 60mph. Citroen charges £80 a month to lease the batteries.
