• An unlicensed operator who had been disqualified from driving has been sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with a five-year driving ban after using a false driving licence.
Paul Canavan, of Laburnum Road, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to three offences of driving while disqualified; three of driving without insurance; three of falsifying tachograph records; one of using a vehicle without an 0-licence; one of the fraudulent use of an 0-licence disc; one of using a vehicle at the wrong rate of duty; one of producing a driving licence with intent to deceive; one of failing to give his name and address; and one
of making a false declaration in order to obtain a driving licence.
Magistrates in Leigh, Lancs heard that on 5 March PC Graham Robinson of Greater Manchester Police stopped an artic being driven by Canavan. The vehicle was displaying an excise licence at the concessionary rate for a tricycle trailer but was towing a loaded tandemaxle trailer.
An 0-licence disc in the windscreen was in the name of Ernest and Natalie Parker, trading as Spencer Wood Demolition. When Robinson examined the tachograph charts he saw they were in the name of James Purcell—and when asked for his name and address, Canavan claimed to be James Purcell.
When PC Robinson said Purcell was known to him, Canavan admitted his true identit-y, and later admitted that in June he had been disqualified from driving for 12 months.
He also admitted that he did not hold an 0-licence and the disc was displayed to conceal this fact.
An examination of tachograph charts revealed that Canavan had driven for a total of 113 days while disqualified.
