• Charterail's survival campaign has been boosted following talks with British Rail about reducing its track costs.
Now Charterail hopes that a new rate agreement based on improved efficiency will be agreed within a few weeks.
Failing this, Charterail says it will be forced into liquidation by BR's high track and locomotive costs. It has complained to the European Commission about an alleged abuse of power by BR but BR says it has nothing to fear and stresses that Charterail must pay its way.
The company operated overnight trains between London, Warrington and Glasgow, using road hauliers for collection and delivery from rail terminals.
It carried around 2,000 tonnes a night for 15 customers, including Safeway, Heinz and Pedigree Petfoods.
