LEYLAND will be showing its new 6x2 20.32 tractive unit in Glasgow at the Scottish Motor Show this November.

Designed from the outset for UK 38-tonne operation, its 3.45m (lift 4in) wheelbase allows coupling, within 15.5m (50ft 10in) overall length, to most well as new two and three-axle trailers. With fifth-wheel positions of 700mm and 600m (27.5in and 23.5in) ahead of the drive axle trailer pin, positions from 760 to 1120mm (30in to 44in) and 864 to 1220mm (34in to 48in) can be accommodated without loss of imposed load capacity.

Unlike most of the competition, Leyland has kept clear of air-bag suspension and lifting axles and instead uses an allsteel suspension. The second axle is suspended by a single leaf semi-elliptical spring with slipper trailed unit and shackled at the front end only.

Unladen, it allows some four inches of free movement so that no load is applied to the second axle until about four tonnes has been applied to the first and third axles. Two hydraulic telescopic clampers are said to prevent axle bounce in the light laden state.

Differing in opinion with Leyland engineers Scammell sees 240kW (320bhp) as the power requirement at 38 tonnes and have specified the 14-I:tre Cummins turbocharged and chargecooled NTE 320 six-cylinder developing 227kW (304bhp) net at 1,9 0Orpm and torque of 1,432Nm (1,056Ibft) at 1,300rpm for its premium weight unit.
