ALMOST HALF the 17,580m miles travelled by heavy goods vehicles last year in England were on motorways and trunk roads, the Government's new White paper on roads revealed this week.
The White Paper, which took imto account the extra schemes added to the programme in May, showed that less than a quarter of the mileage was done on minor or unclassified roads.
According to the White Paper published by Transport Secretary Tom King on Tuesday, 80 per cent of all inland freight was sent by road last year. Road freight costs totalling over £18bn represented 96 per cent of all the money spent on transporting inland freight.
