WHEN Mr. E. C. Woods presented VI' Newport Corporation's application for increased fares to the South Wales Traffic Licensing Authority, last week, he said that the undertaking was losing £1,000 a month. If the application was granted, revenue would rise by up to £20.000 a year.
There had been a disturbing decline in traffic receipts and the reason was a matter for conjecture.
Mr. R. A. Hawkins, general manager of the undertaking, thought that the popularity of television and motorassisted bicycles was partly to blame. Some of the city's buses were 17 years old and had been "brought back to life" to save money.
Decision was reserved.
