From the Rt.. Hon. Alfred Barnes, M.P., Minister of Transport
T SHOULD like, through" The Commercial Motor.," to convey to all members of the commercial motor industry my warmest good wishes for the success of the first post-war International Commercial Motor Transport Exhibition which opens to-day at Earls Court.
The fact that in this highly competitive field British manufacturers are not afraid to invite comparison with the products, of other countries is of major importance, for if in the race for world markets immediately following the war the main emphasis was on output, it is now to an increasing extent on quality.
I am sure that managements and staffs will not be content to rest on their laurels but will make every effort to enhance the great reputation for design, performance and durability which British vehicles have deservedly won in all parts of the world under all sorts of conditions.
From the viewpoint of operators in this country, this first Exhibition for over a decade is particularly valuable as a guide and pointer to the improvements which we would like to see embodied in existing fleets. The replacement of old and uneconomic vehicles is long overdue, and I share the hope of all road transport operators that the day may not be far distant when a larger share of the line types coming off the production line can be spared for British buyers.
In the meantime, the record-breaking achievements of the commercial motor industry in the export drive to earn foreign exchange for food and raw materials must console us for the difficulty in obtaining delivery of the new vehicles which we would like to have at home.
