Allan during the period that he has been sub-district manager, the 47 haulier-members of the 10/813 Group, 'Liverpool, gave a dinner, last week, at which theymade a presentation to Mr. Allan, who has relinquished the position ori taking up other duties. Mr. W.' King-presided. Guests included local officers of the M.O.W.T. and the Road Haulage Organization.
Mr. Allan, in acknowledging the presentation, said that when he started in the sub-district it had -1.700 to 1,800 vehicles and although the petrol ration had been reduced by 50 per cent. in the past 31 years, he took pride in the fact that he got through thejob _without a single operabir being put out of business.
Mr. Allan continued with' thcs expression of personally held views:-s-'
• " So far as I can see there is only one certainty, and that is that the road haulage industry will never again operate under the same conditions that prevailed before the war. We must make up our minds that we are going to be controlled. I will go so far as to admit that some sort of control is necessary, but what I want to see is control of the industry, by the industry, for the industry.
" I am against nationalization and monopoly and there is no monopoly worse than State monopoly. The road haulage industry was built up by private enterprise. Government interference in matters of,private enterprise will place everything in the hands of officialdom until we find .that control ,becomes uncontrollable.
" Not until the time comes when bananas queue up for customers wil4 I ever believe that bureaucracy can run the road haulage industry better than the industry can run itself."
