Special A.R.O. Subscription Rate.

It will be recalled that the Baillie Report proposed that C-licensees should be divided into two groups. A.R.O., appreciating that the first group would have but little direct interest in road-transport matters, and recognizing that operators coming in this group cannot participate in the full benefits of membership, has agreed to a special subscription rate for such licensees. GLOUCESTER TRADERS DEMAND TRANSPORT LIBERTY. Traders and road operators in Gloucester are exasperated at the difficulties created by the hours regulations and last week the local Chamber ot Trade passed a resolution calling on the Minister of Transport to alter the law. The resolution is being sent to the annual conference of the Association' of Chambers of Trade, to be held at Chester this month. It asks for a weekly limit of hours worked, instead of a daily restriction.

Before passing the resolution the meeting heard an address by Major H. E. Crawfurd, A.R.O. president. He expressed the view that whatever licence was held—whether A. A.R.O. OFFICIAL GIVES BOOKKEEPING TALK.

The first of the lectures for operators, which are being introduced in Yorkshire by A.R.O., was delivered at Sheffield at the end of last week, when Mr. A. Beresford, chairman of Sheffield Sub-area, and of the Association's South Yorkshire Haulage Sectional Board, spoke on " Bookkeeping for the Haulier." There was an excellent attendance.

His remarks were illustrated by means of 13 canvas charts, Each chart represented a page of the books of an imaginary haulage concern. By means of an ingenious arrangement of paper blinds, the lecturer could cover up any entries which, for the moment, he wished to delete for lecturing purposes.

Mr. Beresford pointed out that by keeping proper books the haulier achieved two objects. In the first place, he knew at any time what was the financial position of his business. In the second place, he could at any time produce the figures required of him by the Licensing Authority when he made a licence application. It was, he added, essential to use the doubleentry system of book-keeping.
