Two New Models are Included in the Federal Programme for 1930, Exclusive Details of Which We Announce.

WE are able to announce exclusively the plans for 1930 of the concessionnaire in Great Britain and Ireland for the well-known Federal chassis, namely, 'United Motors, Ltd., of 27-34, Walnut Tree Walk, London, S.E.11. Federal passenger and goods chassis have a reputation in all parts of the world and are made by a company which for years has manufactured only commercial motors.

A wide range of models will be offered in this country, the goods side being catered for by several types, the smallest of which is a 30-cwt. four-cylinder chassis and the largest a 3-ton six-cylinder model; whilst for passenger coaches of various capacities between 20-seaters and 3'2-seaters several six-cylinder models are available. All the passenger models will have hydraulic brakes ; likewise all the goods models, excepting the 30-cwt. four-cylinder model.

At the commercial-vehicle Shaw at Olympia the concessionnaire will exhibit a T7W-type 20-seater coach, a T3-type 3-ton short-chassis, four-cylinder, steelbodied tipping lorry, a T3-type long chassis, four-cylinder 3-tonner, *and a EW-tvrto four-cylinder, short chassis, 30-cwt. machine. In addition to these, two new models will be shown: the F7 type, which is an entirely new 2-tonner having a six-cylindered engine, and a model known as the A6B de luxe, this being equipped as an all-weather 28-32seater coach.

This coach chassis is similar to the 50-cwt. goods chassis, except that instead of the 14-ft. 8-in, wheelbase it has a 16-ft. 8-in. wheelbase, and instead of the 32-in. by 6-in, pneumatic tyres it has 34-in. by 7-in. tyres with twins on the rear wheels. It also has a specially large I2-volt lighting and starting battery. One or two improvements in appearance are effected by chromium 830 plating and by the raising of the radiator and bonnet four inches ; the bonnet sides and top are now streamlined. Another Modification is that an auxiliary, semi-elliptic spring is fixed to the rear-axle case above the main rear spring on each side.

The six-cylindered engine of this model has a bore of 31 ins, and a stroke of 41 ins., and 65 b.h.p. is the output at 2700 r.p.rn. The cylinder block is cast integral with the crankcase, the head being L-shaped and detachable. Pressure lubrication is fed to the seven bearings of the 21-in. crankshaft and to all main connecting-red bearings, camshaft bearings and timing chain. Ignition is by battery and coil, and the Zenith carburetter is equipped with •an efficient air cleaner: The clutch is of the dry-plate type, incorporating two 12-in, asbestos-fabric rings mounted on a single disc. A fourspeed kedibox is .provided, this being mounted amidships with three-point support on two frame cross-members. Both propeller shafts are tubular, that before the gearbox having two fabric universal joints and that between gearbox and axle having two all-metal oiltight joints. The standard gear ratio of the heavy-type spiral-bevel back axle is 61 to 1, the axle shafts being of the semi-floating kind, carried in a very robust housing.

Hydraulic brakes on all four wheels act upon drums measuring 1 ft. 4 ins. by 2i ins., and an emergency brake of the internal-expanding pattern operates in a drum 9 ins, in diameter and 3 ins. wide on-the propeller shaft. The frcint springs are 3 ft. 4 ins, long and 2 ins. wide, the rear springs being 4 ft. 2 ins. long by 3 ins. The pressed-steel, channel-section frame is 6 ins, deep and 2 ft. 10 ins. wide. The price of this chassis is £750. The other new model is the F7 type, a six-cylinder chassis intended for 2-ton loads, This has an engine of the same capacity as that fitted to the A611 model, but in the smaller machine the fourspeed gearbox is mounted as a unit with

the engine and clutch housing. The gear ratio of the rear axle is considerably higher, being 4 6-7 to 1.

The frame and suspension are of the same general layout, the main frame members being 5i ins, deep and 2 ft. 10 ins, apart at the rear, and all crossmembers and brackets are hot-riveted according to the manufacturer's general practice. As in the larger model, hydraulic brakes, foot operated, are provided on all four wheels, the hand brake actuating two expanding shoes in a drum on the transmission shaft. • The detachable, steel-disc wheels with demountable liras are equipped with 30-in. by 5-in, pneumatic tyres, twin tyres being fitted to the rear wheels.

This model is available in two wheelbase lengths, 12 ft. and 12 ft. 8 ins.,

the platform lengths from behind the driver's seat to the end of the frame being S ft. and 10 ft., respectively. A modification of the longer chassis, suitable for a 20-passenger bus, body,

measures 14 ft. 2 ins, from the dash to the end of the frame. The short goods chassis i4 priced at 1510, and the long one at £515, whilst the passenger model costs £535.
